Magnitude-6 quake rocks Cagayan early Friday morning; no damage expected

MANILA – A magnitude-6 earthquake rocked Cagayan province and nearby areas before dawn on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. 

The tectonic tremor struck 17 km southeast of Dalupiri Island in Calayan at about 2:40 a.m., Phivolcs said. 

It warned that while the quake was not expected to spawn damage, aftershocks should be expected.

At a depth of 43 kilometers, the tremor was felt at a “strong” Intensity V was reported in Dalupiri island, Claveria, Sta. Praxedes, Sta. Ana, Sanchez Mira, Aparri, Calayan, Ballesteros, Abulug, and Pamplona, Cagayan; Adams, Pagudpud, and Bangui, Ilocos Norte; and Flora and Luna, Apayao. 

Intensity 5 is generally felt by most people, and could jolt awake those who are sleeping. Strong shaking and rocking are felt throughout buildings, and hanging objects swing violently, Phivolcs said. 

In Abulug, items for sale at MJ Castillo Dela Cruz’s store fell down due to the tremor. 

“Moderately strong” Intensity IV, meanwhile, was reported in Tuguegarao City, Tuao, Gonzaga, Lal-lo, Gattaran, Alcala, Amulung, Enrile, and Peñablanca, Cagayan; Burgos, San Nicolas, Batac, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City, Vintar, Dingras, Sarrat, Solsona, and Paoay, Ilocos Norte; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; and Conner, Apayao. 

Vibration from Intensity IV is felt like the passing of heavy truck, the floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak, and a rumbling sound may sometimes be heard, Phivolcs said. 

It said Intensity III was recorded in Rizal, and Sto. Nino, Cagayan; Vigan City, Cabugao, San Juan, Magsingal, Candon City, Sta. Lucia, Sto. Domingo, Narvacan, Santa, San Vicente, Tagudin, Banayoyo, Suyo, Alilem, Santiago, Bantay, Santa Catalina, Caoayan, Cervantes, Galimuyod, Burgos, Nagbukel, San Esteban, San Ildefonso, Sugpon, Sigay, and Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur; Peñarrubia, Tayum, and Bangued, Abra; and Cabagan in Isabela. 

Intensity II was felt in San Fernando City, Sudipen, San Juan, and Bangar, La Union; Tabuk City, Kalinga; La Paz, Manabo, Pidigan, and Lagayan, Abra. 

Cauayan, Isabela reported Intensity I.
