The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Sunday said 74 volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Taal Volcano over the past 24 hours, higher than the 55 quakes observed the previous day.
Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) remains hoisted over Taal Volcano.
Of the total 74 volcanic earthquakes, 46 tremors lasted from one to four minutes.
At the main crater, weak steam-laden plumes rose 10 meters high, PHIVOLCS said.
“Significant sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission that averaged 596 tonnes/day was measured yesterday, 13 March 2021,” PHIVOLCS said.
This was higher than the 582 tonnes/day sulfur dioxide level recorded on Friday.
PHIVOLCS advised the public to stay away from Taal Volcano Island which is a permanent danger zone as sudden explosions, volcanic earthquakes, ash fall and lethal expulsions or accumulations of gas may occur.
It also urged local governments to ensure adequate preparations are in place should the volcano show more renewed unrest.
PHIVOLCS also said pilots must avoid flying close to Taal Volcano as ash and ballistic fragments from sudden explosions may be hazardous to aircraft. —KG, GMA News
