Verbena may become tropical storm near northern Palawan: PAGASA

MANILA — Tropical depression Verbena may reach tropical storm strength before crossing Palawan or once over the West Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau PAGASA warned Tuesday.

Verbena, which is now over the Sulu Sea, made its fifth landfall over San Lorenzo, Guimaras, at 7:40 a.m., followed by a sixth landfall in Miag-ao, Iloilo, at 8:50 a.m.

At 10 a.m., the tropical cyclone was over the coastal waters of Hamtic, Antique.

Its prior landfalls were over Bayabas, Surigao del Sur and Jagna, Bohol on November 24 and over Talisay City, Cebu and Vallehermoso, Negros Oriental, this Tuesday morning.

Verbena has maintained its winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It is moving west-northwest at 35 kph.

The storm will continue to track west-northwestward, pass Cuyo Islands on Tuesday afternoon and make another landfall over northern Palawan tonight.

Wind signal no. 1 remained hoisted over 13 provinces in Southern Luzon and Central and Western Visayas, including:

  • Occidental Mindoro
  • Oriental Mindoro
  • Romblon
  • northern and central Palawan, including Calamian, Cuyo, and Cagancillo islands
  • mainland Masbate
  • Antique
  • Aklan
  • Capiz
  • Iloilo
  • Guimaras
  • Negros Occidental
  • Negros Oriental
  • Cebu

Wind warnings in other areas in Visayas and Mindanao have been lifted.

HEAVY RAINS

Verbena and the shear line will continue to bring heavy rains across Luzon, including Metro Manila, and western Visayas through Wednesday noon.

Up to 200 millimeters or intense rainfall may be experienced in Western Visayas, Mimaropa, Camarines Norte, Aurora, and Cagayan Valley.

Moderate to heavy rains may still be experienced in Palawan up to midday Thursday, while the shear line may still bring heavy rains in Northern Luzon, especially Isabela, Cagayan, and Apayao through Friday noon.

The threats of widespread and serious flooding and landslides remain.

Verbena may leave the Philippine area of responsibility early Thursday.
