TS ‘Crising’ accelerates, moderate to heavy rains expected over eastern parts of Mindanao

Tropical storm “Crising” has accelerated as it heads towards Davao Oriental-Surigao del Sur area, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In its severe weather bulletin issued at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 13, PAGASA estimated the location of Crising at 250 kilometers (km) east of Davao City, Davao del Sur at around 1 p.m.

The weather disturbance packed a maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometer per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph, while moving west northwestward at 25 kph.

The state weather bureau said moderate to heavy rains may affect Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao del Norte between Thursday and Friday morning, May 14.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal number 2 has been raised over the southern portion of Surigao del Sur (Lingig, Bislig City), southern portion of Agusan del Sur (Loreto, Trento, Bunawan, Santa Josefa, Veruela), northern portion of Davao Oriental (Boston, Cateel, Baganga), northern portion of Davao de Oro (Laak, Monkayo, Montevista, Compostela, New Bataan, Nabunturan, Mawab), and northern portion of Davao del Norte (Kapalong, San Isidro, Asuncion, New Corella, Talaingod).

Areas under signal number 1 are the rest of Surigao del Sur, the rest of Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, the rest of Davao Oriental, the rest of Davao de Oro, the rest of Davao del Norte, Davao City, Bukidnon, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, and the eastern portion of Zamboanga del Sur (Josefina, Molave, Tambulig, Aurora).

PAGASA said Crising would bring gale-force winds in areas under signal number 2, while strong breeze to near gale conditions would be felt over areas under signal number 1, especially in the coastal and mountainous areas.

Based on the forecast track, Crising will move westward or west northwestward and is seen to make landfall over Davao Oriental-Surigao del Sur area between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Its slight intensification is likely and is forecast to remain tropical storm prior to landfall.

Crising is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression as it traverses the rugged landmass of Mindanao by Friday, and will emerge over the Sulu Sea on Saturday morning, May 15.

It is seen to further weaken into a remnant low on Sunday morning, May 16, while passing over Palawan and would dissipate shortly afterwards.

By Friday morning, Crising will likely be in the vicinity of Loreto, Agusan del Sur.

It will then move westward and will be 180 km west of Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental on Saturday morning, and will likely be 115 km west of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan by Sunday morning.
