An 18-year-old student raised the money to buy a laptop for online class by sewing face masks using indigenous fabric.

According to Sandra Aguinaldo’s report on “24 Oras,” Marian Charie Liao initially bought a second-hand sewing machine in March just to have something to do amid the community quarantine.

As class opening became nearer, however, she realized that she would need a laptop to attend the lessons.

“Ayoko naman pong magdagdag po ng gastusin po dito sa bahay kina Mama kasi po ngayong lockdown nga po nagpatong patong po ‘yung bayarin,” she said.

Marian’s mother is a call center agent, while her father is paralyzed after suffering a stroke and bacterial meningitis. She has four other siblings that the family needs to support.

When Marian saw an online shop selling indigenous fabric, she got the idea to sew face masks using the material.

Thanks to tutorial videos and trial and error, she slowly improved her skills and became good enough to sell the masks and accept bulk orders.

“May mga tao rin po na nag-donate po sa akin ng pailan-ilan, natutuwa daw po sila sa effort ko. Sobrang thank you po sa kanila kasi kahit hindi po nila ako kilala tinulungan po nila ako,” she said.

Marian eventually raised enough to cash to buy a second-hand laptop while helping her family.

“‘Yung natutunan ko po pag gusto may paraan po. ‘Yung pandemic po ginawa ko po siyang opportunity para masimulan na po ‘yung business,” she said. “Pagkatiwalaan lang po ‘yung sarili and always open yourself for new opportunities.” —MGP, GMA News
