PH’s COVID-19 cases top 504,000 as death toll nears 10,000

Metro Manila — Coronavirus cases in the Philippines reached 504,084 on Tuesday with an additional 1,357 infections, while the death toll edged closer to 10,000.

In its latest report, the Department of Health said that of the total infected, 27,857 or 5.5% percent are active cases.

For the third consecutive day, Davao City led the areas with the highest number of new cases with 130. Rizal came next with 71, followed by Quezon City with 66, Pampanga with 54, and Benguet with 52.

The death toll also hit 9,978 after 69 more people succumbed to the illness. Of this number, the DOH said 56 were earlier reported as recoveries and were reclassified as deaths.

Meanwhile, recoveries are now at 466,249 with 324 more cleared of the dreaded virus.

Four testing laboratories failed to submit data on time and were not included in the latest figures, the department said. It added that after final validation, seven duplicates, as well as two cases found to have tested negative, were removed from the case count.

Among Filipinos abroad, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed 14 new cases for a total of 13,605. Two more survivors also brought the number of recoveries to 8,684. The death toll is still at 941.

The coronavirus has so far infected some 95.6 million people globally, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University. Over two million have died while 52.7 million were able to recover.
