Philippines hits new record for most fresh COVID-19 cases in a day as country total breaches 29,000

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 20) — The country broke its record anew for a single-day increase in “fresh” COVID-19 cases with 578 infections detected in the past three days, the Department of Health said on Saturday.

Along with 365 new cases from the department’s validation backlog, the country total is now 29,400, the agency added.

From the fresh cases, 296 were from Central Visayas and 218 from Metro Manila, with the remaining 64 coming from different areas. From the backlog of cases, 147 were from Central Visayas, 60 from Metro Manila, and 158 from other regions.

Meanwhile, the DOH said 20 more people have died from the viral disease, raising the death toll to 1,150. Recoveries hit 7,650, with 272 new survivors.
