PGH celebrates release of critically-ill child who survived COVID-19

MANILA — The Philippine General Hospital celebrated the release of a young patient who recovered from COVID-19.
In a video posted by PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario, the boy, who was wearing coveralls and a face mask, could be seen waving to health workers as his stretcher is pulled through the hospital hallway.
“Celebrating the discharge of the very first critically-ill pediatric COVID-19 survivor at the Philippine General Hospital after 30 days!” Del Rosario posted on social media.
Under the Department of Health classification, a patient is considered critically ill if he or she is intubated. This means he needed help breathing through a ventilator.
“It takes total TEAM effort to make this happen with God’s grace. Kudos to PGH Pedia COVID-19 Team!” he added.
“PGH Fight!” the health workers chanted as they showered the child with silver and gold confetti.
The staff also handed him red balloons and bags of goodies, prompting the boy to weep.
“This child’s tears of joy motivates us to continue this fight no matter how long it takes,” Del Rosario said.
PGH is one of the three hospitals that were first designated as COVID-19 referral hospitals. This resulted in PGH assigning a whole ward just for COVID-19 patients.
