Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 17) – The Pasig City government has approved an ordinance which waives all regulatory fees for private schools until face-to-face classes resume.
City Ordinance 32, Series of 2020 provides that all regulatory fees owed by private educational institutions – basic, secondary, tertiary, and post-graduate- are deemed waived temporarily.
“We know private schools are having a difficult time too, and some are in danger of closing. Many of their students can’t afford tuition anymore. This puts our public-school system in danger of overcrowding,” said Mayor Vico Sotto in an online post.
However, the ordinance states that all private schools have to still renew their permits with the local government.
Sotto also said that the city government will extend the scholarship fund to 3,000 indigent students enrolled in private schools. He added that schools will help in identifying these beneficiaries.
The upcoming school year will officially begin on October 5, with online distance learning as mode of instruction in kindergarten to high school levels, due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, colleges and universities are not covered by the said schedule.
