Number of overseas Filipinos with COVID-19 breaches 8,500

MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Wednesday 32 more Filipinos abroad were sick with COVID-19, raising the total tally of overseas infections among Filipino nationals to 8,506.

The respiratory illness also killed 5 more overseas Filipinos, bringing the death toll to 554, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the number of those who recovered from COVID-19 is also up by 30 to 5,131, it added.

“As more and more Filipinos affected by COVID-19 seek the government’s assistance for repatriation, the DFA remains committed to fulfilling its mandate of assisting our nationals, in partnership with host countries, and ensuring their safe return, whenever possible,” the DFA said in a statement.

To date, 2,821 Filipino patients abroad are undergoing treatment for COVID-19, broken down as follows by region: 80 in the Asia Pacific Region, 469 in Europe, 2,120 in the Middle East and Africa, and 152 in the Americas.

In the Philippines, the novel coronavirus has so far sickened 38,511 people. The tally includes 1,270 deaths and 10,438 recoveries.
