Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 18) — The Manila City government is close to finishing the construction of its 336-bed capacity COVID-19 field hospital at Luneta Park with operations set to start in July, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said on Tuesday.

“We are on track on our 60-day [target]. We are on our fourth week. Nasa 60% na kami (We are already at a 60% progress),” he told CNN Philippines’ The Source on Tuesday.

“We are optimistic that [we can open] by July,” he added.

Construction of the hospital, made out of modular containers, broke ground last April — a move intended to lessen the number of COVID-19 patients in the city’s medical facilities, following the surge in cases last March.

Domagoso said the facility is expected to accommodate mild and moderate cases, and hopefully “create space for those with other sickness” to lessen the burden of other hospitals already attending to severe and critical COVID-19 cases.

“Pinakamahirap na trabaho sa lahat, paano pagdidikitin [ang containers] ng safe at walang leak. Nasa interior na kami ngayon at this very moment,” Domagoso noted.

The Manila LGU earlier said the hospital will be airconditioned, with oxygen tanks on standby to cater patients in need.

As of May 16, Manila has recorded 61,304 COVID-19 cases, with 1,817 active cases and 58,344 recoveries. A total of 1,143 people succumbed to the disease.
