JAKARTA – The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus has topped 10,000 in Indonesia, a government spokesman dealing with the COVID-19 disease said Thursday.
Achmad Yurianto told a press conference that Indonesia recorded 347 new coronavirus cases over the previous day, bringing the country’s total to 10,118.
Of that number, 792 patients have died and 1,522 recovered, Yurianto said.
Still, considering Indonesia is one of the world’s most populous countries, the low number of confirmed cases is seen by some health experts as a result of under-testing, partly due to resource constraints.
As of Thursday, Indonesia had only tested 72,351 patients.
Wiku Adisasmito, head of the expert team of the country’s Task Force to Accelerate the COVID-19 Mitigation, told a virtual press conference with foreign journalists, “We are doing our best to increase the capacity of tests by laboratories.”
Among Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia ranks second in the number of confirmed cases. It trails Singapore’s 16,169 cases and is followed by the Philippines with 8,488, Malaysia with 6,002 and Thailand with 2,954, as of Thursday.
