Gov’t expected surge in PH COVID cases — Año

Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said the government “expected” the increase in COVID-19 cases in the country after the highest single-day confirmed cases was recorded Sunday.

“Ito ay resulta ng pag downgrade ng [quarantine] classification, pag bukas ng business sectors na kailangan naman. (This is the result of the downgrading of [quarantine] classification, the opening of the business sector, which is needed). It’s always a continuing rebalancing between health and economy,” Año told CNN Philippines.

“This is somehow expected in our move to loosen some restrictions,” he added.

Año also assured the public that the government is “ready” for the increase of cases.

The DILG chief said the government will also look into specific areas where cases are high to see if the lockdown is being properly implemented.

When asked if the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases will recommend the transition of NCR to modified general community quarantine (MGCQ), Año said: “The IATF is open for that.”

Meanwhile, the DILG chief called anew for the public’s cooperation, saying the effort to curb the spread of the virus needs the support of everybody.
