Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 14)— Two regional offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) have suspended classes in public schools in Metro Manila and Calabarzon amid soaring COVID-19 cases in the areas.

In a memorandum issued Friday, the DepEd-National Capital Region announced the suspension of classes from Jan. 15 to 22 to “ease the health burden” — both physical and mental — of personnel and learners caused by the spike in coronavirus infections.

Classes shall resume on Jan. 24 on “purely asynchronous distance learning modalities,” DepEd-NCR said.

Meanwhile, the DepEd-Calabarzon also said classes will be suspended in the region from Jan. 17 to 29.

The schedule of the midyear break will still be from Jan. 31 to Feb. 5, both offices said. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the period to comply with possible “backlogs” in learning output.

Both DepEd branches noted that private schools can exercise their own discretion on the suspension of classes when COVID-19 risks in their areas are high.

DepEd on Tuesday gave its regional and school division offices the authority to suspend classes as the country continues to tally record-high new coronavirus cases.
