Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 27) — An engineering student from Mapua University, who recently bagged an international design award, plans to pilot test his innovation made of crop waste “early next year.”
Carvey Ehren Maigue, winner of the first-ever sustainability prize given by The James Dyson Award, said his project is in preparation for making his product widely available in the market.
The award was given by the foundation of British inventor, industrial designer and entrepreneur James Dyson.
“Ultimately, the goal is to deliver the product to the user na sa tingin natin ay magbe-benefit (who would benefit from it) the most,” Maigue told CNN Philippines’ The Source on Friday.
“In particular, this would be our farmers and also the people who want to gain access to renewable energy,” the inventor said of his target market.
The engineering student said some people have reached out to help him to establish the pilot plan.
Maigue created the “AuREUS,” which absorbs ultraviolet light from the sun and then converts it into electricity. The particles needed to create this process inspired by the science behind the northern lights could be sourced from rotting fruits and vegetables.
Maigue’s award came with a cash prize worth £30,000 (around ₱1.9 million). He earlier said part of it would be used to buy equipment to boost AuREUS’ manufacturing process.
