4.7-magnitude quake jolts Sarangani

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has rocked Sarangani province early Tuesday morning, May 25, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake occurred around 3:46 a.m. and traced its epicenter at 8 kilometers southeast of Maasim, Sarangani.

The quake was located at a depth of 38 kilometers.

It was felt as a “moderately strong” earthquake at Intensity IV in Maasim, Alabel, and Glan Sarangani; General Santos City; and Tampakan, South Cotabato.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity IV in General Santos City and Kiamba, Sarangani; Intensity II in Koronadal City, South Cotabato; and Intensity I in Kidapawan City, Cotabato.

The quake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Phivolcs said no damage or aftershocks were expected from the earthquake.
