1 dead, 22 rescued from capsized boat off Quezon

One person died while 22 others were rescued after a passenger boat capsized and sank off Atimonan, Quezon, this morning, police reported.

Rescued were 17 passengers and five crew members of M/B Gesu Bambino, according to a report from the Quezon provincial police.

Another crew member drowned, a separate report from the Philipine Coast Guard said.

According to the police report, the Gesu Bambino left Atimonan Feeder Port for Perez town around 11 a.m.

While sailing more or less 500 meters away from the port, the boat encountered strong waves around 11:30 a.m, until it capsized and submerged, the report said.

Upon learning the incident, Jenalyn Shipping Lines sent M/V Pinoy RORO while another company sent a cargo boat from Alabat to rescue Gesu Bambino’s occupants.

Personnel of the Atimonan Feeder Port, along with the Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and Atimonan Police also conducted search and rescue operations.

Seventeen passengers and five crew members were found after an hour of rescue operations, police said.

They have been brought to Alabat and are set to undergo medical checks at a local hospital.
