Taal shows signs of activity with 15 quakes in last 24 hrs

Taal Volcano in Batangas showed recent signs of activity, with 15 volcanic earthquakes recorded in the past 24 hours, state volcanologists said Friday.

Taal Volcano in Batangas showed recent signs of activity, with 15 volcanic earthquakes recorded in the past 24 hours, state volcanologists said Friday.

But the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said water temperatures at the west sector of the Main Crater Lake remained constant at 29.5 degrees Celsius.

In its 8 a.m. update, Phivolcs also said Alert Level 1 remains over Taal Volcano, meaning a hazardous eruption is not imminent.

On Thursday, Phivolcs said Taal recorded 13 volcanic earthquakes in the previous 24 hours.

Phivolcs maintained the Main Crater is "strictly off-limits because sudden steam explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate."

Also, it said the northern portion of the Main Crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila Trail, may become hazardous when steam emission along existing fissures suddenly increases.

Phivolcs added the entire Volcano Island is a permanent danger zone and permanent settlement there is strongly not recommended.  Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
