Phivolcs: No volcanic quake at Mayon in last 24 hours

December 31, 2014 9:10am Mayon Volcano remained relatively calm in the last 24 hours as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology did not record any volcanic quake during that time.

In its 8 a.m. update, Phivolcs also said rain clouds covered the summit and prevented visual observations of the summit.

Phivolcs also said Mayon's alert status remains at Level 2, meaning the chance of a hazardous eruption within days to weeks has lessened but is not quite gone.

The agency reminded the public to avoid entering the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone due to the danger of rockfalls, avalanche, ash puffs and sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at the summit.

It also warned those living in valleys and active river channels to remain vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in case of prolonged and heavy rainfall.  Joel Locsin/LBG
