Phivolcs: No volcanic quake at Mayon in last 24 hours

No volcanic quake was detected at Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Saturday.

In its 8 a.m. update, Phivolcs said it noted white steam plumes of weak to moderate volume creeping down-slope and drifting west-northwest.

Phivolcs did not observe any crater glow due to rain clouds covering the summit.

Mayon's alert level remained at 2, meaning the chances of a hazardous eruption within days to weeks has lessened, but the unrest has not ended.

Phivolcs also reiterated its warning against entry in the six-kilometer permanent danger zone "due to perennial hazards of rockfalls, avalanche, ash puffs and sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at the summit area."

It also reminded those in valleys and active river channels to remain vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in case of prolonged and heavy rainfall. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
