Phivolcs: 1 volcanic quake at Mayon in last 24 hours

At least one volcanic quake was recorded at restive Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Friday.

At least one volcanic quake was recorded at restive Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Friday.

In its 8 a.m. update, Phivolcs also noted an emission of white steam plumes of weak to moderate volume that drifted west-northwest.

However, it said no crater glow was observed Thursday night because of rain clouds covering the summit.

Phivolcs said Mayon's alert status remains at Alert Level 2, meaning the chances of a hazardous eruption within days to weeks had lessened but is not quite gone.

The agency reminded the public not to enter the six-kilometer permanent danger zone due to the risk of rockfalls, avalanche, ash puffs and sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at the summit.

It also reminded those living in valleys and active river channels to remain vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in case of prolonged and heavy rainfall. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
