PH marks 121st Independence Day

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 12) — The country's second highest official led the 121st Independence Day rites at the Rizal Park in Manila on Wednesday.

Vice President Leni Robredo was accorded arrival honors by the Armed Forces of the Philippines. She also led the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony. She was joined by outgoing Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

In her Independence Day message, Robredo called on the public to never forget the lessons of history and honor the sacrifices of the forefathers who fought for the country’s freedom. At the same time, she reminded Filipinos of their responsibility to defend and preserve that freedom for future generations.

In 2018, Duterte was heckled when he attended his first Independence Day speech at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite. When Duterte began his speech for the country's 120th Independence Day, less than 10 demonstrators started chanting, "Hunyo 12, huwad na kalayaan! Duterte patalsikin, pasista biguin!"
