Quiel now a severe tropical storm, will intensify into a typhoon

MANILA - The weather disturbance off Palawan has intensified into a severe tropical storm Thursday morning, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

Quiel was last spotted 360 kilometers west northwest of Coron, Palawan, packing maximum winds of 95 km per hour and gusts of up to 115 kph. PAGASA said Quiel, which is moving east, is unlikely to make landfall.

The 17th storm to enter the country is expected to intensify into a typhoon before it leaves the Philippine area of responsibility on Saturday, PAGASA said.

The storm's trough will bring light to moderate rains over Zambales, Bataan, Mindoro, and Palawan, according to PAGASA weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz.

Northern Luzon will, meanwhile, experience light to moderate with occasional heavy rains due to the storm and the frontal system, she added.
