NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, June 19 (PIA6) - - Officials of the Department of Health (DOH) in separate interviews assured on the department’s readiness for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome – Coronavirus or MER-Cov.

Assistant Secretary Dr. Gerardo Bayugo Jr. in a press briefing here said that all (DOH) facilities have been prepared to take care and manage this kind of special viruses that may enter the country.

“All DOH hospitals, including Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital here, have been prepared to handle and manage these cases.  In the event this (MERS-Cov) happens we have done the best we can do to prepare our facilities,” Bayugo assured.

Although prepared, Bayugo said, they would like to prevent entry by installing thermal scanners in ports of entries in the country.

Bayugo urged those passing through international ports to fill out properly the forms being distributed with the correct information and address so that they will be traced as well as their co-passengers in case they feel something odd.

Meanwhile, DOH6 Regional Director Dr. Marlyn Convocar said they usually want to detect fever and the history of origin of suspected patient until validated by laboratory findings.

Convocar added that personnel from the Bureau of Quarantine, an attached agency of the DOH, are fielded in all airports to monitor especially with international flights.

“DOH people are in place in ports with international flights as well as thermal scanners,” Convocar said.*(JSC/EAD-PIA6 Negros Occidental)
