Death toll in Pansol resort area plane crash rises to 9

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 1) — Authorities say nine people are dead after a plane crashed in a mixed use residential property in Miramonte Village in Barangay Pansol, Calamba, Laguna on Sunday.

The Calamba police said a BE350 plane with ID number RP-C2296 crashed around 3 p.m.; they also said all fatalities were recovered and the flight manifesto recorded nine people were on board the plane.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the two people injured in the incident were caretakers of the house where the plane crashed. Maria Luisa Roca and John Rae Roca suffered burns and were brought to hospital.

Local authorities continue to conduct search, rescue and retrieval operations.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said the plane lost radar contact at 3:10 p.m. while flying 25 nautical miles from Manila. Police said the flight left from Dipolog at 1:40 p.m.

CAAP Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board investigators have been dispatched to the crash site to determine the cause of the accident.

Calamba police, meanwhile, said the provincial crime laboratory office is in the process of establishing the identities of the recovered bodies.

The fire from the crash was under control shortly before 5 p.m.

Eyewitnesses told CNN Philippines that they saw the plane flying at a low altitude, with a loud engine, before it plummeted and exploded.

"Mababa lang 'yung lipad nung plane. Nung medyo nasa taas siya, medyo mausok na siya tapos ang ingay niya. So malalaman mo talaga na parang pabagsak siya," Ryan Estrellado told CNN Philippines.

Ahrcee Genil, a participant in a company team building activity near the area, said the plane crashed at around 3:10 p.m.

"Napansin namin, alam namin mababa eh kasi maingay siya eh. Pinilit niyang umakyat. While he’s trying to climb, mayroong mga nagbagsakan na debris, and then nawala siya sa ulap. And then nung tumakbo kami sa kabilang side ng report, nakita namin medyo ume-ekis na siya pababa eh, tapos sumabog na lang siya," Genil told CNN Philippines.

[Translation: We noticed it, we knew it was flying low because its engine was loud. It tried to ascend. While he's trying to climb, debris started falling, and then it disappeared in the clouds. And then when we ran to the other side of the resort, we saw it slightly zig-zag in the air while it was descending, then it just exploded.]
