2 dead in shooting incident in National Center for Mental Health

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 9) — Two people died in a shooting incident Thursday at the National Center for Mental Health in Mandaluyong City.

Police reports said the incident happened inside one of the wards in the mental health center around 2:30 p.m. A 27-year-old psychiatric patient with a court case and an unidentified woman believed to be his wife were allegedly killed by their supposed grandfather.

The mental health center, in a statement, expressed sadness over the incident and offered condolences to the victim's families.

"We are saddened by the tragic event that unfolded at the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) and we offer our condolences to the family of the victims," its statement read. "Due to the sensitivities of the issue involving the patient, we ask for privacy for the bereaved family."

The hospital said police are already probing the incident.

"The NCMH is committed to ensuring the safety of its patients and staff and is taking measures to tighten security at the hospital," it said.

It added no other patients and NCMH staff were hurt nor involved. The hospital is in full operation after the incident, it added.
