Fire razes homes of thousands of Jolo residents

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Thousands of residents of Jolo town in Sulu were displaced after a huge fire razed their homes around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24.

The fire started at the back portion of Dennis Coffee Shop in Barangay Walled City, according to the investigator of the case, PO1 Abdel Haffez Amin of the Jolo Municipal Police Station.

The fire spread quickly to adjacent Barangay Bus-bus in Jolo, Sulu, and reached the fifth alarm.

After almost three hours of firefighting, Amin said fire had been placed under control.

He said that all the police personnel in Sulu have been directed to augment Jolo cops to do crowd control to avoid theft and looting.

They were also directed to establish evacuation area in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Sulu provincial government.

As of this writing, authorities have not determined the number of houses destroyed by the fire, according to Supt. Salbino Piad, chief of the Provincial Maritime Police in Sulu

Brig. Gen. Divino Rey Pabayo, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu, said the Metro Jolo Inter Agency Task Group had been formed. /atm
