Fire hits Iloilo orphanage

Zeny Quilantang, ABS-CBN News Iloilo Posted at 03/28/16 3:00 PM Fire struck an orphanage in Barangay San Antonio, Molo, Iloilo Sunday night.

The blaze was caused by a fire that was left unattended at the kitchen of St. Dominic Girls' Home.

Mother Superior Sister Serafica Tolentino said they ignored and even turned off the smoke detector when it rang, believing that it was already defective.

The sisters and their wards only left the orphanage after seeing smoke coming out of the kitchen area.

The group refrained from opening the kitchen door, thus preventing the fire from exploding outwards.

At least P1 million worth of property was damaged by the blaze.

None of the occupants of the orphanage were hurt in the incident.

Authorities reminded the public once again to be vigilant against fires.
