Makati Med 'takes note' of Pimentel's apology over COVID-19 protocol breach

"We hereby take note of the apology of Sen. Pimentel for such breach and we are pleased that the Department of Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III has concurred that, indeed, breach was committed," MMC Medical Director Saturnino Javier said in a fresh statement released Thursday.

MANILA — The Makati Medical Center (MMC) said Thursday it has "taken note" of Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III's apology for violating the medical protocols when he accompanied his wife to the facility while being a carrier of the highly contagious coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

"We hereby take note of the apology of Sen. Pimentel for such breach and we are pleased that the Department of Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III has concurred that, indeed, breach was committed," MMC Medical Director Saturnino Javier said in a fresh statement released Thursday.

The MMC on Wednesday issued a scathing rebuke of Pimentel for going to the hospital even while supposed to be on home quarantine, breaking protocol. The hospital called Pimentel's act "irresponsible" and "reckless."

Pimentel, the day after, apologized to the medical institution, calling the incident "unfortunate."

"I would like to sincerely and profoundly apologize for this very unfortunate incident. I never intended to do any harm to anyone," the senator said.

MMC then said it will "move forward" and asked its community to turn their efforts instead on solving the crisis brought about by COVID-19.

"Let us move forward and I urge the MMC community to focus our energies, skills and passion once again toward conquering the virulent pathogen confronting us - COVID-10," Javier said.

The MMC did not say if it will file charges against Pimentel.

Pimentel drew the public's ire for going to the MMC delivery room to accompany his pregnant wife, potentially exposing other pregnant women and health workers to COVID-19.

A group of lawyers is preparing criminal charges, including a disbarment case, against Pimentel.
