RUBYTOWER2018

Almost 50 years ago, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the town of Casiguran, Aurora. The Ruby Tower, a six-storey building in Binondo, Manila, collapsed instantly during the quake killing 268 people. Several buildings in Binondo and Escolta suffered varying degrees of structural damage.

Rising above this painful experience, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the City Government of Manila, in cooperation with the Minor Basilica of Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church) and the Emergency Response Integration Center (ERIC), will hold a symposium and exhibit on 2 August 2018 at the Quiapo Church. Attached is the program of activities for your reference.

This aims to promote awareness and understanding of geologic hazards that threaten our communities and highlight the learnings from various earthquake events since the Casiguran Earthquake in 1968 to help each of us in our mitigation and preparedness initiatives of our respective institutions.
