Aftershocks continue to rock Surigao after powerful quake

Surigao del Norte continues to feel aftershocks in the wake of the strong earthquake which hit the province on Friday. At least 30 aftershocks were felt in the province and Surigao City yesterday.

This has prompted many affected residents to remain camped outside, with many on the provincial capitol grounds.

Electricity is slowly being restored, but many areas still remain without power because of damaged electric posts and power lines.

Water supply is also problematic in many areas because of the lack of power.

Many Surigao City residents are now coping with generator sets and have formed long lines at gas stations.

The municipality of San Francisco, which was hard hit by the quake remains without power.

The bridge connecting San Francisco to Surigao City suffered extensive damage. Some sections of the national road are also closed because of large cracks due to the quake.

Six people have died in the quake while 108 others were injured.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said initial estimates put the damage to roads and bridges at P200 million.

Many hotels are now fully-booked in Surigao City as affected residents are afraid to go back to their homes.
